Hello!

I am in the process of making the Wood toy steam train from a set of plans In the Shopsmith/Popular science book from 1988. This is the same train that can be seen on a shelf behind Nick in the Sawdust secession video’s

I am having problems figuring out the measurements of part “C” Lower Platform, “B” Middle Platform, “A“ Upper Platform. To be specific, where the notch is cut in each piece. Am having problem the most from part “B” I may be overlooking it, but I do not see any measurements for where the notch should be cut. Only the overall WxL for each piece. A picture of the underneath would be very helpful.

Thanks.

Hi,

I often eye-up that train on the shelf behind Nick myself, it is on my "someday" list. :)

Anyway, the plans for this train have appeared in several places over the years including Hands-On Magazine and the Shopsmith Woodworking Projects (Book I). There is also a version of the plans from Shopsmith free on the web. Check out the following site:

http://www.freetoytrainplans.com/

I think that you will find the info that you need at this site (The notches on the Mid Platform, Piece B, for example are 3/4" x 4-1/4").

Hope this helps,

Dennis

Hey!

Thanks a lot. Just what I needed. The plans in the book do not show everything the web site does.

Thank you, I will stick the plans in the "if my daughter has a boy" folder. It will be a great project.

I'm glad you guys figured this out on your own, but for the record you can figure out this information from the PopSci plans. Everything you need is on the Top View (page 33); you just have to do some math. In fact, the PopSci plans are a good deal more complete and informative than what we had room for in Hands On #2, where my toy steam train plans were first published.

With all good wishes,
