Maybe it requires a special touch, I am able to set the joiner knives in less than 3 minutes (customer watching) using a metal ruler on end and my ears/eyes to determine how much. I find the planer knife adjustments to be even be more simpler and quicker using the knife setting gauge. I find cleaning the cutter head, knives, wedges and screws and screw holes plus new lock washers under the wedge screws helps when adjusting the knives. I sold all my knife setting tools a few years ago as I never liked the time required or the results of using them. I believe we sometimes rely more on our tools than our senses when doing a task.

I find shifting one joiner knife toward the couplin end will still give a clean cut for rabbets or tongue tenons. I resharpen when the next nick occurs.

Yea! It is good to have an agreement with the metal ruler method. At least there is two of us!

I also agree you can slide one knife toward the coupler side without noticeable effects on rabbets/tongues, as long as you measure your rabbet width from one of the correct two knives.

I sharpened a set of planer knives this afternoon with the SS jointer/planer knife sharpening jig and adjusted them using the MINI PLANER PAL set from Grizzly. The MINI PLANER PAL adjustment set worked fine and at $30 I think worth while.

IDH - It's a good feeling, ain't it, when you successfully get that sharpening job to work!

ldh,

Thanks for the comments on the mini-planer pal. I find as my eyes age, these things help.
