I'm having some trouble replacing my quill bearings. I've source the proper high quality bearings, and have had no trouble removing the outer (larger) one, but can't seem to figure out how to replace the inner (smaller) one. The ID of the old and new bearing seem identical, but is more than .100 smaller than the shaft on which it would need to pass over to be pressed into place. I noted mention of some 2 piece shafts, but can't tell if mine is 1 or 2 pieces (early to mid 1990s production). What am I missing? Thanks for the help.

I had the same problem. I removed the pin & then tried separating the piece which i thought was just a sleeve- it isn't . Knock out the pin which hold the two shafts of the qwill together. I used a little heat & the two pieces could then be easily twisted & pulled apart. Good luck.

Thanks Tony. The problem is I can't seem to find the pin. Is it particularly well hidden, or am I blind?

You have a one piece shaft. I believe the 1990s all had one piece shafts. There used to be some photos of the difference in the two shafts, but I can't find them in my recent scan of old posts. Maybe they have been removed because of age, or maybe someone else can find them. They were originally entered by reible.

Check the photos in post #38 (by jcbrowne), these might be some of the referenced photos:

Some other possibly related images:

I too feel that there are some images no longer available. I thought there were some images that actually compared one piece and two piece spindles.
