The $100 speed changer

I know that i need to get the lathe speeds lower so i can turn bigger things. The problem is that i don't see myself forking down $100 (about the same cost of my shopsmith!:( ) for a speed reducer for my shopsmith 10E. Isn't there something that I can build for less?

The speed reducer DOESN'T fit the 10E. So your going to have to come up with something different.
