How To Stretch and Attach Chair Springs

This question has little to do with SS other than the chair involved being my preferred perch for reading the woodworking forum posts.:mad:

My favority recliner is losing is comfort. Three springs have come unattached from the wooden frame. I have little experience with re-attching springs. So far I am still searching for a workable method or a tool designed to stretch the springs. Any ideas?:D Jim

Hi, Jim- If the springs came loose in the first place because something broke or cracked, fix that problem first. Then you might try using needle-nosed Vice-grips to clamp onto the unattached end of the spring, wedge a bar of some kind near the attachment point, then use the bar as a fulcrum and the Vice-grips as a lever to stretch the spring where you need it to go.

You can make the lever longer by duct-taping the Vice-grips to a pry bar or something, but make sure the connection is secure before you put too much stress on it (says the voice of experience). :eek: Oh, and safety glasses are helpful in case the spring lets loose at the other end.
