If you watched closely, he put his finger in sideways to the blade, and it looked like behind the teeth to me.
Pretty gutsy test regardless.

You are correct. He did not stock his finger into that blade like would happen in a real world accident but he was definitely in the "RED ZONE" and I try to stay completely away.
I don't think he has made enough money yet to pay me to stick my finger even that close.

All and all, it would be a good safety item. But, can you trust it to work? Not me but if and when it does save a finger or hand it would more then pay for itself. If it failed who do you sue? There must be some liability issues to thoes who own such a system.
BTW, My finger tip chopped off by the jointer was down to the mail.. couldn't find the missing piece and bleeding was a sight to behold.. Got it stopped with ice and some pressure.. Just capalary bleeding but lots of it. and to beat all, the tip actually grew back!! I must be part frog!!

....It is my understanding the there have been misfires on the saw. Most have been traced to the fact that the operator neglected to make the necessary test. Others have been traced to things other than flesh touching the blade, and other errors.
I also believe there have been numerous testimonials of people that for whatever reason have come into contact with the blade and mechanism saved them from serious injury.
There are also stories of people simply switching into safe mode thus defeating the product which to me makes as much sense as removing the blade guard and never reinstalling it.
That is the story as best I know it.
To try to add something to Ed's Story - I recall reading a review in one of the magazines. They reported part of the stopping mechanism actually got in the way of some operations. I imagine the system is changed from safe mode to avoid this unique issue.
