Well I have been working on getting this 1963 A. O. Smith Corp Mark VII Motor working. I followed some ideas you all gave me on a recent thread I posted called “Motor Has No Torque” but I have not found the problem yet. So far I have noticed while taking the motor apart, the coating on the wires is very brittle and is falling off everywhere. This looks like it will become a big problem in the future with shorts and stuff. At this point even if I replace the capacitor or find another problem these wires are just too old and brittle.

So, where can I find a replacement motor?

This is probably a special single phase reversible motor that A O Smith made for the previous Shopsmith company back in the 50's. I doubt that there are any "catalog" replacement motors available.

That said, the motor's stator, after being wound, was probably emersed in varnish, and this is what you see flaking off. An electric motor shop can easily determine if there are any grounds or shorts. If there are, they can re-wind the stator.
