How about offering sales items "while supplies last"? First come, first served and cancel orders that can't be shipped? Or would that cause other problems?

I think that would work if you were trying to close out a product. However I think Shopsmith is trying to sell since that is their business.
I don't see the problem with Back ordering something. They must give you the choice to accept the backorder or cancel and you not charged until the product is actually shipped.
Someone said it this situation might be a sign of impending doom for SS, it can be if we the customers allow it. Right now we have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Since SS does not charge for item until it ships we can't lose, however if we continue to order and endure backorders we may be able to help the company through this hard economic hard time.
It would be an entirely different story if SS took the order, accepted payment and then put you on backorder. Then they could be using your money for their cash flow and it could be lost if they went under. But the way Shopsmith is doing it is totally above board and I think speaks highly of their integrity and desire to do right by their customers.

Well,
My order came in today for the inflatable contour sander. It was due on Monday. So after all this I decided I'd better just take a look into my next order. Shucks Everything I had on my list is a backordered item now. Oh well I have everything I need to make sawdust and will just have to wait now to get new toys/tools to learn on. Too bad but then again with my giant jig and the attachments I have I can still really have fun. Merry Chirstmas to all of you and have a happy new year.

Don't over look the fact that they(SS) not only do NOT charge your credit card until item is shipped, but, they also do NOT charge for shipping on back ordered item(s) if part of the initial order WAS previously shipped. You only pay shipping on the original NON back ordered items. Who else does it this way?????

I find myself trying to buy into the idea that one good purpose of the email sales offers is to push to get enough orders to do a production run or parts order.
while emotionally unsatisfying, I can see the value of it.
it also makes sense that it would lead to a lot of backorders.
for a couple of the items I have on backorder, I would love it if SS adopted a policy of letting us add more of an item on backorder (at the original price when we placed the order) for as long as an item is on backorder. I'd like that so much better than the half-price CD offer and it might help reach the magic number for a run.
on a not unrelated topic, I am not sure how to react to SS discontinuing the Customer Service phone number. it is still listed on the SS site, but, if you call it, you get a recording that tells you to call the number that is shown on the website as the number for placing orders. I guess that, if the same people are answering both lines, it makes it easier for all incoming calls to be in the same queue to figure out who is next.
I called on Thursday because it had been 8 days since I had placed my most recent order. I was concerned that there might be a problem with the order because, out of 15 different items, none had shipped. turns out that I just managed to invoke Murphy with my choices.
while I had him on the phone, I did inquire about a couple of items that had been on backorder the longest. I've had 2 sets of the TA turning blocks on order for quite a while. when I pointed out that sets of them had been sold at the factory clean-out sale, he assured me that nothing had been sold at that sale that was on backorder and that the TA turning stock sold there must have been damaged or incomplete. any comments from those who actually made it to that sale?
thanks for letting me vent,
Ivan

You placed your order at 11:55 and had your order the next day before noon?
Thats great service but how would that be possible? Any place I have worked Fed Ex and UPS deliver in the AM and pick up in the PM. You had your order in another state before they would normally pick it up from the shipper.
