Hope someone can help. The carriage locks have to be replaced so I bought the whole new rod assembly. Number one problem is I can't get the old one off. So I guess I need to cut it off. Any advice ? Problem 2 is do I really need to take off the head stock and carriage to replace a new one? Any advice would be appreciated.

No you shouldn't have to remove either the headstock or the carriage to replace the locking bar assembly.

On my 510 there is a nut on the opposite side that can be loosened with a socket. Once the nut is off the handle can be pulled out of the carriage. The spring will, of course fall/spring to the floor.

The hard part of re-assembly is to hold the spring in a tensioned position so you can thread the nut back onto the rod. To do this, I found it is easiest to put the machine in drill press position and hold the spring tensioned along the bar with a pair of locking pliers. This beats the dickens of laying on the cold hard floor.

If this doesn't answer your question, ask again.

Yup. Drill press mode is the way to go. In addition to clamping the spring while compressed, I clamp the lock bar handle to the carriage so the rod remains in place. That way I have no problem installing the flat washer and nut. Once the nut is threaded onto the rod, go back to horizontal mode, remove the clamps and adjust the lock.

I'm sure you are welcome from all of us - By the Way- It would be interesting to us if you could go into your (User Control Panel) "User CP" and enter you location. A General description like ' Near New York City' would be good enough. Among other benefits, this may allow us to have local get togethers.:)
