I have fairly recently installed new belts adjusted and lubricated. After a while my motor started sounding like it runs on diesel. Runs fine but very loud and clattering. Sound familiar? Solutions?

Did You Tighten ****everything**** Down? Check For "loose" Whatever You Loosened.
You Might Want To Review How You Reassembled It(make Sure It Is Correct).
I Have Not Experienced This Myself----good Luck!:)
p.s. DID YOU ALIGN POLY V BELT CORRECTLY...IT IS **NOT** CENTERED AND IS DIFFERENT ON EACH PULLEY.

New motor belt causes the floating sheave to travel further from the motor where there is crud on the motor shaft. This can cause the floating sheave to stick somewhat. Move the belt housing back and watch the sheaves as you adjust the speed. I have found when installing new motor belts, if the fan sheave set screw has loosen, it causes a sound like a piston pin slap. I was able to find this by trying to wiggle the fan sheave and was able to do it. At what speeds does this occur? Does the sound change as the speed changes. The new motor belt puts more pressure (normally wider than old belt) on the control sheave and the bearing at the end of the control sheave which is controlled by the speed control quadrant. Is the retaining loop hooked on the quadrant? This increased pressure can cause the motor bearings to increase in noise too.
Over tightening the set screw in the idler shaft eccentric bushings can cause noise in the idler shaft bearing. Since you had to remove/install the drive sleeve assembly to put the upper drive belt on, maybe some damage was done to the drive sleeve bearings. Have you tried using a long screwdriver to listen/locate the area of the noise as this helps determine where to look and investigate any strange noises. I find my ears, by listening, are very critical in locating most Shopsmith problems.
Feel free to contact me off line (bill@billstoolz.com) if the above infro does not help.

It very well could be something simpler than a mechanical issue. Make sure the front side of your poly-v-belt is located in the second groove. Then if your new drive belt in one of the new ones from Gates, remove your drive belt and check the edges for bulges. If there are some bulges (most often at the joint) you can slice them off with a very sharp chisel or knife. Or --you can also call Shopsmith and they will send you a replacement. Either practice will work, and a new belt is likely to have it's own bulge.
I'm now running a Gates belt that has been knife trimmed. There is about 100 hours on this belt and it is still running good.
