I have had my UTR for quite some time. I don't do a lot of turning but I do use this item, and I really like it. The added weight takes a lot of viberation out of the machine. I have turned several pens and a couple rolling pins using it and I think it is great.

Is there any non-shopsmith tool rest that could be adapted to the shopsmith? The universal tool rest (http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/catalog/l_univlathetoolrest.htm) is great, but at that price you really start to think about other possible options that could be retro-fit.

I had the chance to use one at a Shopsmith traveling academy. It is truly a wonderful addition for turning larger objects, especially bowls. At the academy had the opportunity to use it when removing the inside of a 8 to 10 inch bowl. All of my turning so far has been limited to objects less than 4" diameter, and would have gotten one if turning larger wood.

Even at this price it is a real good addition to the lathe. I will not hesitate if future demands require it.
