I bought the 50th anniversary model of the 520 when it was offered at a Home/Garden Show demonstration and have been adding to it ever since.

Saw a demo at the Santa Clara Convention Center during one of their Home/Garden shows in 2004. We kept coming back to the demo and finally my wife said, "if you want it then get it". Not wanting to upset her, I purchased the 510 w/Bandsaw and Dust Collector as a package deal they were offering at the time. It sat in a carton for over a year before I unpacked it and put it together after retiring and moving to Nevada in 2005.

As a side note, my brother-in-law has had a SS since back in the 60's (or before) and actually used it to build a log home in the 90's. It's still running fine on a farm in western North Carolina.

In 1958 a ten year old lad saw in a magazine, probably Popular Mechanics, an article about ShopSmith and wanted it more than a slingshot! About 45 years after the sling shot his wish came true. No regrets and happy in the sawdust. Now to get the DC to get this dang sawdust & chips out of here, SWMBO will be happier too!

I've been aware of the ShopSmith Mark V for several years - mostly through reading about them on the Internet. Always thought it would be fun to have one - but never was actually around one physically.

A local church was having a silent auction - and had a Mark V 510 for sale. I thought about it for awhile - and my wife bid on it when it dropped in price. She gave me the 520 fence upgrade kit for Christmas, and I'm now learning how to use it.

Jim - Congrats. on being a new Shopsmith owner, and welcome to the Forum on your 6th post. Since you are new to the Mark V - If you didn't get a copy of the book "Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone" along with your purchase - you should get one! They are available from Shopsmith part No (555069) Cost about $30 to $35. If you are new to woodworking or need to sharpen up your skills - order a copy of the "Mark V self Study Course" (505717) (it's in a 3 ring binder)

These two items will be the very best $100 you could spend for your woodworking operations. Following the instructions in these two publications will help you to avoid many of the problems you read about on this forum.
