How do you remove the sand paper from the disc sander without damaging it and when it is damaged, how do you get it all off and cleaned?

I never tried without getting it wet, because at the academy I attended, the guy told us he just soaked it in the tub at the hotel!! It didn't take much to do, I used " GUNK" to clean off the left over glue, dried it off, stuck the new paper on, sprayed on a little WD40, wiped it down and never thought any more about it. I did not get any rust.

Try using heat to remove the sandpaper. It may be reusable, but don't count on it. Once it's off, clean the disk with mineral spirits.

I just looked at the older thread, and realized that Replacing the paper was part of the issue. Didn't SS have a velcro system for both the flat and conical disk?

Yes, you are correct, the velcro system CAN NOT be used for sharpening. The heat buildup destroys the velcro - believe it, don't test it. If you have a velcro system you don't need, send it to me.

However, I use a flat disc for all my sharpening tasks and I use the conical disk almost exclusively for edge sanding.

I just purchased extra sanding discs. I have (3) standard discs. One is setup for sharpening, and the other two are setup with different grit paper, and I also have the velcro system. If you watch ebay closely, you can get them at a fairly reasonable price with shipping. It seems most items on ebay for SS go pretty high. But, patience is the key here, just watch and wait. I got my last one, including shipping for $33.59
