On an earlier thread a discussion came up about the need for a shaft extension to operate SPT's when a second carriage was added on the left side of the model 500 headstock. (http://www.shopsmith.net/forums/showthread.htm?t=2891)
I just finished making a simple adaptor that works well on both upper and lower shafts and solves any issues with driving SPT's with the extra carriage in place. I thought I would share some pictures showing how this was made. The overall length is @ 3". The whole thing cost @ $18.00. I haven't tried with all of my SPT's yet but I think this should work with any of them. Maybe someone already makes an adaptor like this, but I couldn't find one. Anyway, problem solved. Here are components. 5/8" ID rigid coupling, 2" of 5/8" shafting, drive hub
3287
Coupling with shaft inserted.
3288
Coupling with shaft and drive hub mounted.
3284
Coupling mounted on lower shaft driving jointer. I had to drill & tap an extra 5/16-18 threaded hole at 1/4" from end of coupling due to short length of lower shaft sticking out of guard.

Coupling mounted on upper shaft driving bandsaw.
