I just picked up a ss mark v mounted planer. It didn't come with any instructions and it seems to be stuck. I can't raise the bed up or down. Is there some simple thing I am missing here? The planer doesn't seem to have ever been used.

Can you turn the crank that should move the table up/down?

I sprayed some pb blaster on the post and got it to move about a 1/4".

Check the chain tension. It should be secure but not tight like a banjo string.

Lubricate the chain with 20W nondetergent machine oil. I actually use a can I got from Shopsmith over ten years ago. Don't over do it.

The barrel nuts, on the top of the mounting posts, could be in a bind. Loosen the set screws that secure the barrel nuts to the 4 mounting posts, try to raise/lower the table and retighten the set screws.

Inspect the mounting posts to make sure they are not bent.

The chain should drive all four posts in sync. If this turns out to be your problem, there is a simple but multistep procedure that you need to follow. A call to SS should have a manual on its way in short time.

IMO this is not a major problem and should cost very little if anything to fix. If I can't tell you what's wrong, I'll bet someone else chimes in here soon who can.

I don't have one of these but I have read that shipping can often results in bent jack screws......... This is not an issue with the way shopsmith or some ebayers ship but if it is not done right...

You might want to go to:
www.ssug.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1118

If you go down a few you will see a post with reference to the issue of bent parts.

Again I don't know much about these machines but I have read else where in an addition to the post I referenced that if shipped wrong things get bent and before you get to much farther it wouldn't hurt to make sure this is not the case with yours.
