I wanted to post a thanks to those who answered some dumb questions I asked when I was doing my "Shorty." And, thanks to Bill Mayo who sold me a set of cutdown bars that were perfect. I am enjoying having the drillpress at hand in the basement with my other Mk.V And, alignment went very well, thanks to the leads to posts on the topic. One thing I will definitely order is a three spoke quill handle-nearly a necessity on a DP. This is especially true when the SS is a Shorty because the table sits quite low compared to a typical drillpress. I am intalling a WoodPeck DP table- a really nice unit-I bought at an introductory price and had been saving it for a Shopsmith.
I have a Harbor Freight castered stool that has height adjustment- usually use it to sit and play my guitars-it will be perfect for a working position.
I always put my safety glasses(around 15 of them all around)on the table under the quill, so never an excuse for not using- more necessary, if that can ever be correctly said- at the low work position.
