Some call it a Gloat. This morning while surfing Craig's List I came upon a Shopsmith with the following. Band saw-jointer-planer with power stand-dust collector-power station-dust covers for all and 3 boxes of who knows what. Its about 30 minutes from home so I called the guy and went over and wrote him a check for $1000.00. Do you think I got hurt? It is a early 90's model mark 5 with out any up grades but in great shape.

The plan now is to go pick it all up tomorrow afternoon with the help of a neighbor. I have been looking for a power station or stand for my strip sander for a while now. I have a model 520.

One question if I may. The power station does not have casters. Are they the same as the Mark 5's. Shopsmith.com has 2 different item numbers listed.

GOOD deal. And I belive the casters are not the same width, much like the stand alone planer & jig saw. And they cost $95!! But you still got a good deal. Make sure you turn it on and run it through the paces. And I am only just a little bit jealous. :cool:

I measured the casters on my MKV, and on my power station ,and they appear to be identical - at least by my measurements. What is different is that the power station legs are a little farther apart and require a "spacer Kit" in order to install the casters on the power station. If you call customer service they will know exactly what you need.

There are three part numbers for casters. They are as follows:

555354......Mark V

555353......SPT and Power Stands except Scroll Saw

555457......Scroll Saw

I don't know if there are any real differences in the actual caster assemblies or not. As 8iowa has reported, the Power Station caster installation requires some additional spacers. The legs are further apart than on the Mark V. The spacers are just think washers (if you will). About 3/4" thick. They could be replaced with appropriately sized wooden dowels if you have caster sets that do not fit.

The mark 5 and power station casters are not the same. I purchased mine on ebay for the power station. They were the wrong size. I had to make wooden shims to make it fit. Also had to move the foot peddle over a couple of inches so it would clear the legs. Other wise it works fine.

As I understand it: All three caster versions are the same EXCEPT for the included spacers. The Power station uses 7/16" spacers on each bolt. The Scroll saw stand needs longer 'spacers'. These spacers require longer bolts.

As for the location of the 'foot pedal', older Mark V/5 casters had the foot pedal very close to the end(too close to use on Power station). Later versions have two sets of holes so as to mount the foot pedal either in the outer(original) location or further in to allow using with the Power station. I do not know if the Scroll saw stand has the same need.

The location of the foot pedal is important to determine b4 purchasing used items as the older version will not work on Power station(as you have discovered). Do not know the Scroll saw stand requirement. BTW There is more than one version of casters for Power stands. An older version mounted to the OUTSIDE of TWO of the legs. You tilted the stand up onto the two rollers to move it.(strong arm needed)!:eek:

Thanks for all the advice about the casters. When I made the deal for this stuff it was behind a lot of other stuff in a dark basement and the guy had the phone ringing off the hook with other potential buyers. I took one quick look and paid him. Today I picked it up and the power station and the planer have casters:D :D :D. I got a better deal than I thought. I'll post some Pictures next week after I sort through everything.
