i bought the 170 piece set from woodcraft last year when it was on sale for $29.95. $5.00 more than the last several sales. i have used several of them from the 1/8" to the 1/2" and have found them to be very good. it is the brad point set so i obviously have only drilled wood and plastics no metal. i have been considering getting the regular bits next.

Hi Paul,
I brought that up almost a year ago. (http://www.shopsmith.net/forums/showthread.htm?t=1855&highlight=China) Some people do knot seem to care, but I do my best to buy product made almost anywhere but China, with the US made product being my first choice. Part of the reason we are in this economic downturn, IMHO, is due to all the manufacturing jobs that have fled this country. When we buy "cheaper" product, made in China, we are cutting our own throats, IMHO! I do knot view this as an political correct point of view; I view this as survival. I have to think about my descendants.
Our country is turning into a service orientated country, where we service the wealth requirements of world wide citizens that are knot ours. Service jobs do knot pay as well as manufacturing either.
Tim,
Your last statement is right out of my Econ 101 textbook from 1979. At that time it was stated we were becoming a service oriented country and Japan was becoming the manufacturing giant. Through the natural course of events Japan would become a service country and the manufacturing would be pasted down to another third world country. Sound familiar? I'll bet that in 20 to 30 years China will be where we are now, and manufacturing will be in Africa or another third world country. This is a fact of life, like evolution.
For me I will buy quality whether it is made in the USA or China or Timbuktu. We are part of a world economy and need to accept that fact.
With that said, I will buy USA with all things being equal. I have bought items made in the USA that were junk.

A little hard to accept, when I haven't had a job for like ten months now.

I too hope you find your way back into the work force soon, Bob.
The drill bit special that Woodcraft has going is a set of drill bits, either brad point or twist, that are made in China. It says so right on the outside of the cartoon as though they were quit proud. The set contains 170 bits ranging in size from 1/16" to 7/16". There are 19 different sizes in the set.
They feel sharp and do not have any obvious burrs. Now I didn't check every bit. In fact I only touched six or seven of them.
It will take awhile before I know whether I got suckered or not but at that price I can afford to discard a bit now and then.
How's that for rationalization.
I'd bet the price of both sets that the bits being sold by Shopsmith are much higher quality than these.

Hang in there. Something will come along (although it may not be what you want). In 2002 and 2003 I went without a job for 16 months until I got an idiot proof low paying job. Just don't let it get you down. Be thankful you aren't living in NE Indiana.
