Starting to rebuild an older (82) bandsaw and ran into a problem at the tilting table function. The front bolt that has the handle on it is psinning freely. Checking out the rear bolt, can see that the bolt has a couple of small wings that rest in a notched housing that keeps it from turning. Picture of wings:

The housing on the front bolt is spinning in the hole, so I cannot back the nut out enough to tilt the table. Can't find any set screws in the frame that keep the housing in place.

Any ideas on how to back the nut and bolt out?

Thanks!
Matt

Try using the SS tool set to spin the nut down tighter? So that you can get the handle on it and turn it that way? That happens on my saw table all the time, I can't get a full handle turn to tighten it.

Thanks for the idea Bob. It rolls with the handle either way. Was hoping that would work, but no luck. Other thoughts?

Yep, just got it off with the vice grips and PB Blaster. A little frustrated I didn't think of that earlier!

After I backed the bolt out, cleaned and put it all back together to see if the table would lock down tight. As soon as the nut was tight enough that I needed to use the handle to further tighten it down, the bolt and housing moved again.

Anyone know what holds the housing in place? Is the housing called a "Trunnion?" SS is having a sale on bandsaw parts, this would be a great time to pick these up if I knew what the blazes I was looking at...

Are you aware that there is an exploded parts breakdown in the Accessory Catalog and that the same parts breakdown is available online (on shopsmith.com) in PDF.

I think the parts that you are referring to are detailed here (items #46 and #47):

Very Bottom of the page. http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/

SS site was the first place I went for the exploded parts diagram. However, there must have been an update from my 82 version to what they have posted. Looking at my original owner's manual and its diagram, there is no item called "Trunnion Support" and the bolts are different part numbers. Bushings (correct term, not "housings" I was initially using) are the same P/N, so I'm wondering if the Trunnion Support helps lock the bushings in place?

Matt,

I went out to the shop this morning to see if I could develop an understanding of your problem, I can not because my bandsaw and the documentation are different.

Assuming that the bolt we are discussion is the one associated with the trunnion tilt lock mechanism, I do not have a bolt like the one you pictured.

Mine is a standard hex bolt and I am not certain that I have a "trunnion support". The one bolt (the pivot point) appears to be something else. I can't see very well because it is behind the wheel and can not be removed without pulling the lower wheel.

Incidently, when I tighten down the trunnion tilt lock, there is a point where the bolt turns. It seems to prevent me from tightening the lock too much. I have to look at it better (in the daylight) to say for sure. I may have your problem developing as well.:(
