Hi,
I am new to the Forum and have always wanted a Shopsmith and I found one on Craigslist the other day. There are a few missing pieces and it had some rust on it but the motor is working fine. I found an Owner's Manual download for a 10 ER and most everything looks quite the same. I am wondering if anyone can tell me the differences between a 10E and a 10 ER. I am cleaning things up, got the Quill to losen up and it springs back. Got everything to slide back and forth on the Rails. I Got it for $80 bucks. One thing I noticed is the name plate doesn't look to come off, it is riveted on rather than screws. It definitely needs a new belt does anyone know the size and where to get one.

I have attached the pics from craigslist.

Any advice and help would be appreciated.

not bad for $80. to get a belt merely take the one you have to an auto parts store or hardware store or if there is an industrial supply house near you any of them can match it up and get you going. also welcome to the forum.

Although I'm not a 10E or 10ER owner (I have a Mark V-500), there is a site with what appears to be more information that you will initially need. It is under Yahoo Groups which will require you to sign in to access the information and photos. As a new owner of a 10E, I'll just bet you will find it useful.

Here is the link: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Shopsmith10ERusers/

I have two 10ERs (and no Mark 5s!). The yahoo group is a great resource of information. I wish it were a forum more like this one, but it is what it is and it's still extremely helpful. I had never even heard of Shopsmith before 8 months ago when somene gave me an old 10ER. I recently bought a second one locally. Neither of the ones I got were in as good condition as yours when i got them. But with a little TLC and elbow grease, they clean up quite nicely.

There are a couple other ER owners here, so if you have any questions just go ahead and ask. There's not a ton of differences between the E and ER. The extension table on the ER is aluminum instead of plywood and the extension table bracket is shaped differently. The ER added the table riser crank. Things like that. I'm not sure what the complete list is. An E can be "upgraded" to an ER rather easily, I believe. If your logo plate says it's a "Model 10E" but has a serial number starting with "R," then it was manufactured as an E and was factory upgraded to an ER before being shipped out. One of mine is like that.

You got a good deal for $80. I hope you have fun with it!

Hi and welcome to the forum!

I'm a sort of owner, in that I got one for my brother but have yet to deliver it. I've had a short while to play with the 10ER and I have enjoyed it. If I had the room I wood be out looking for one for myself... but for now that just isn't going to happen. I'm sure you're going to enjoy yours too.

Another forum which I also like better then the user groups over at yahoo is:
www.ssug.org

They have a section for 10e/10er's and have a few owners there too. Of course many of us are members at all three of these places.

The 10's are the earliest shopsmiths and a lot of the features and functions are similar. And a few of the items that are sold by shopsmith will still fit the older machines.

I have gathered a good deal of information off the web on these machines and a lot of it came from the yahoo group. From that information I see that the belt should be a 1/2" x 38" (goodyear 4L380).

Good luck with your new machine.
