More than likely you don't have an MPEG2 direct show codec installed. Media Player on any Windows computer prior to Vista do not by default have an MPEG2 decoder installed. If you install DVD player software like WinDVD or PowerDVD, then the codec would be installed and MP11 or those players would be able to playback the DVD.

You could try to goto www.doom9.org and under "Filters" you'll see some MPEG2 filters there. ffdshow is pretty well known and I've used it in the past.

Or just search for "free mpeg2 filter" or something similiar and I'm sure you'll find something useful.

We just worked thru that issue here. We ended up having to purchase a program called Cyberlink PowerDVD. Works like a charm but torked my jaws at having to spend the few dollars it cost. fjimp

Try majorgeeks.com and look under multimedia if you want a dvd player.

Have you tried playing them in a regular old DVD player hooked to your TV to see if they work there? If they don't, then the DVD's are the problem.

I got the free DVD from Penn State and it would not work on my PC. It worked in a portable DVD player and a DVD player hooked to a TV. Recently got a laptop, the DVD plays just fine on it. Other DVDs played on the PC including the ones from SS. Go figure. Gave up trying to figure out PCs when I retired from the business in 1998.
