OK I am about to give up on removing the allen screw in the headstock that holds the quill lever mechanism. I removed the putty with an ice pick and have tried soaking it over and over in liquid wrench but the darn thing won't budge. I even took a hammer to the allen wrench to get some extra torque and nothing is working. Now funny thing is that the screw wasn't in far enough to begin with because the quill lever mechanism came right out so I could clean it up, and it was puttyed in that position. So my question is how important is that screw? Everything seemed to work without it being in far enough to hold anything. Or does anyone have any other suggestions on how to get this stubborn screw out?
Thanks in advance for the help.
Jeff
All that set screw does is hold the quill in. MAYBE someone used lock tight on it?

Baddlad, did you make sure all the putty was cleaned from the set screws threads. You said you can get the quill completely out. Did you look inside the quill housing to see if the end of the allen set screw was marred or mashed to where it will not back out? Try going all the way in and have the set screw come out the inside. If all else fails, try warming the headstock casting up in the area of the set screw to expand the aluminum ( use heat gun or hair dryer ) then see what happens.----Dave

I did make sure all the putty was out looks really clean and no rust there at all that I can see, I checked the underside like you said and it looks good too, I will try heating to see if that works. Thanks for the help.

If all else fails, you can easily drill it out, retap oversize and use a helicoil to bring it back to the same set screw diameter OR tap oversize and use what's called a half dog point set screw OR just drill and tap in a slightly different location.
