I guess I don't understand how using the cone would not give good results, assuming the bushing is centered in the base and the base is perfectly circular (I assume a manufactured one would be). I attended Mike Heavey's seminar at The Woodworking Show and that is how he suggested it be done.

Hi,
I can not say that all routers sub bases are not going to be off but I will say I have not seen one that isn't off by at least a little.
I have a sub base off one of my routers that I haven't done this to yet (actually this is a spare as the router has a different sub-base for the Milescraft product line installed).
What I did was find the "highest" or the part of the base farthest from the center line of the router shaft and use a wax marker with a "H", then I did the same for the shortest distance and marked that with a "L". (They are about 120 deg. apart in this case).
I then drilled a hole so I could use the centering "bit" and with a sharp pencil marked both the high and low spot on a sheet of paper. In this case they are about 3/64" apart (for those who are fractions challenged it is almost a 1/16"). I shot a picture so you can see what it looks like... keep in mind the distance is just short of 1/16".

Like I said it sure doesn't hurt to check...

I called ShopNotes and ordered the plans the jig from Issue 76. My choices where: 1) the bound volume for the year @ $30.00 with 3-4 week shipping or a xerox of that specific article shipping the next day for $9.00.
I'll post a review but I have full time job and the ice is nearly off the lakes so I'll have to get a line wet soon - so don't hold you breath.

Hi,
....By the way I did take a look a the jig Chuck found and it has some clever features, and not a hard project to build. The head clamp was a nice touch using the quick release idea. If you or Chuck decide to build it I'd like to hear how it works out....
