I'm kinda disappointed this chapter was edited prior to Shopsmith coming out with their Shaper/Drum Sander Fence Kit. http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/catalog/ms_shaperdrumsanderfence.htm To me this accessory gives a MUCH better way to sand straight edges than shown in Figures 18-6,7,8 or 9.

Also would like to add - I tried the homemade drum sander as seen in figure 18-10. Didn't work for me!:( During the operation of it there was sand dust on the table (in successive passes) that put some pretty good scratches in my table that were very hard to get out. ONLY NOW I notice Figure 18-10 was using a steel table rather than an aluminum one. Can't recommend making one of these!

Hi, Mark! If you are asking me - I don't have any newer instructions on how to sand, except to say - Never sand deeper than the grit on the sandpaper you are using.

I agree pictures 18-6, 7, 8, 9 are getting outdated. Matter of fact if you buy a new Sanding Drum, the enclosed paperwork will tell you not to do the operations shown in 18-7, 18-8. They must have had a few folks launching boards across their shops...

They had the shaper fence. No one had thought to use it with the drum sander(yet).

What is in 18-10 that indicates a STEEL table????? Looks like a standard 500 aluminum table.
