Very short read. Hadn't thought of sanding without a platen. I got it primarily to try the chisel sharpening system. I really like it for putting a curve on my pen turning skew. Made that a simple task. Also have several old chisels that I acquired second hand that are too short for the sharpening jig. I think SS could add to this chapter.

Keep in mind that this 'online' version is an older version of PTWFE and will not include the latest 'stuff'.

Hi,

In a couple of chapters we will get to:
http://www.shopsmith.com/academy/sharpening/index.htm

If you want to read ahead feel free. It doesn't cover the conversion kit but it does show the strip sander in action.

I got mine to replace a hobbyist version I had. It was also smaller and had a built in disk to the side. It was under powered so you really had to go slow and keep to smaller projects. In the end I used it mostly with a leather belt for final edging.

When I got the sharpening jig I found I liked that better then the older guide. In fact I'm thinking I haven't used the guide since...
