Big Ed
Welcome to the forum. I just recently made a twin bed frame for my grandson and the SS in the horizontal boring mode was a real answer to my situation having to drill holes for dowels in a board 39" long. I am attaching a link to the Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone book with the chapter on horizontal boring. It will help you figuring out how to put your tables and axillary tables to give support for long work pieces. This book is a great tool for SS owners. Hope this helps you figure out your SS.

Hi all,
By the way, when I registered for the forum it didn't say that your username had to be one word, so I used "Big Ed" but the forum choose to address me as "Big", go figure...
It looks like you have fit the "Extreme" category to get your username changed by Admin as it now reads "BigEd" - congratulations!!!...
By the way, welcome to the forum and the wonderful world of Shopsmith.

Thanks to all who answered my cry for help.
To answer Charlese first, I wasn't using the Mark V to drill the dowel holes. I have a 15" Rockwell floor stand drill press. Even lowering the table all the way down, I could only get the shortest pieces of the face frame under the drill spindle. I'm working my way up to figuring out the tables on the Shopsmith.
"BigEd" (one word) ;)
Hi Big! Yes I remember you were using a stand alone drill press. Welcome to the Wonderful World of Woodworking!!! I just wanted to point out your Mark V Shopsmith is really one of the very best boring/drilling machines available.
This reminds me of a happening when I had a neighbor who had a FULL shop of power and hand woodworking tools. He had produced many beautiful furniture pieces and had been woodworking for many years. Although he never said any discouraging words - he kind of sneered at my Shopsmith.
One day when he was making wood shutters, he told me he was trying to figure out how to drill end holes in the louvers for the pivot pins. His drill press wouldn't open far enough. My comment was, "You need a horizontal boring machine" . He said, But I don't have one".
I invited him down to my shop and showed him the horizontal capability of the Shopsmith. We bored all of the pivot holes the next afternoon. I think there were 240 holes.
After a while, when you learn more about your Mark V, you may be ready to sell that Rockwell. (If you don't need it for metal work)

Hi BigEd
I have a 3"X21" old Craftsman Belt Sander (old enough to be made out of aluminum) and like Gary said, it's the tool of last resort. The Belt Sander will do a lot of damage quickly, especially with a coarse grit belt.
