Having a similar problem as farmer, I laid the machine on it's side and used a parallel clamp across the leg in question.

Did you/farmer have roll pins missing which should have kept the rod from separating even though the legs were 'pulling' on them? Or were the legs pulling the camshaft out of its socket?

P.S. Just re-read farmer - his Camshaft was being pulled out.??????

I'll have to look again, it has been a long time ago. It did it from the time it was new (the 1988 510) and the old gray mare had the same problem. My old shop floor had some seams in the sections of concrete that were a little rough and if you were rolling it across one of those seams the cam shaft would pop out. I decided that the leg panels were spreading too easy and I squeezed them to a tighter curve and the problem went away forever. Now when I have one apart I put a little more curve in each leg just as a prevention (it doesn't cost anything :D ).
