As I get my Shopsmith restored, I'm thinking about small projects that will be fun to undertake when I'm done. I like wood marking gauges, and would like to make one. Searching for plans on the web, I came across these - a simple but handsome marking gauge. Here 'tis:

I'll post pictures when i get down to making one. I thought some of you might like to see these plans and give it a whirl. :D Alec

About the best marking gauge I have is one that Jim McCann (who wears too many hats here at Shopsmith to count them all) made for me. It appeared in my book "Using Hand Tools." It's a "combination" gauge, so you can set up to score up to three different lines, and two of those can be sets of parallel lines. It's impossible to find a marking gauge as useful or as versatile on the commercial market.

We're getting a syllabus for a "Making Hand Tools" course at the Academy, and this will be included, most probably.

It certainly has a very high "gizmosity" factor! Looks like a fun project.

Holy Katts!!!! Now I know why I spend as much time on this site as I do. That is a neat project. I have been looking for one of those gages for years. What kind of wood is that make from?

Thanks

Mark

Weatherman says snow is moving into Northeast Iowa tonight. Old Man Winter is not done yet.

The gauge is made from wenge, Mark. And thanks for your kind words. Thanks for yours too, Spike, although I'm not sure that "gizmosity" fits in the "Kind Words" column. However, it certainly fits under "Cool and Confusing." Rest assured that I will weave that one into my sampler.

With all good wishes,

That gauge looks fantastic. Are there plans I can buy to build one?

Methinks post #3 is as close to one as you will find!
