Awhile back I asked about hooking up a light, in the shop, that would flash if someone needed my attention. I had another thought today. This might be cheaper. I'll put down that black and yellow tape around my SS. Then I'll tell my family it is "the quiet zone". For my safety do not disturb while I am in there.

Great idea! Until they are needing to inform you the house is on fire!:D I do not know HOW you are going to keep the ss etc. quiet AND get anything worthwhile done!:p

Sounds to me like a waste of yellow and black tape.:(
Yes, sometimes someone will come into the shop unannounced. Everyone has a need to develop a habit of focusing on the present wood machining. Since it is only when a woodworker's attention is distracted from what he is doing that wrecks happen. Just don't let anything distract you until that operation is done. Even a surprise or loud noise should not make a sawyer release his hold on a board until it and hands are safely away from the saw.
Drilling and making set-ups are not a problem. Hand operations also not a problem. Routing and power sawing (also power sharpening and some sanding) are operations where one just cannot allow a disturbance to affect the operation. Focus is the answer!
Don't think tape will help! But if your family is constantly interrupting your shop work, they need to be told of the dangers. I'm pretty sure that establishing a set of safety rules along with explaining their need, for your safety will help a lot.

Navycop I will not beat up on you about the quiet zone. Working alone as I have for years there have been several times when I was scared Sh&&$$liss  by some one slipping in the shop when I did not hear or see them coming. One time a guy taped me on the shoulder when I was running a board through the table saw. I just wanted to deck him. I wish I had a great idea to throw in here but just haven't figured out anything except locking the door.
