Still working on the three doll cradles though my shop time was somewhat restricted by a sore back.

Played two hockey games last Tuesday morning without incident, then went down to the shop after lunch, dropped my "T' handled allen wrench, bent down to pick it up and my back protested and has been doing so ever since. Ain't aging FUN?

Since I am in the dreaded sanding stage of the cradles, I decided to sand and finish individual components rather than sand everything then finish everything. It sure takes the boredom out of sanding. As a result, I have pieces in various stages from rough sanding on the drum sander to all six ends of the cradle basket with two coats of finish completed. I am using a paste varnish applied with a rag and can do two coats in a day so hopefully everything will be finished this week.

I hope the weather this week has not been too hard on the forum members.

Have fun!

John

John - Sorry about your back! Of course, it couldn't have been the hockey that set up your injury! Age has a way of catching you off guard! It's just part of the "Golden Years".

My weekend was not quite productive as I had wished. Thought I would finish construction of lower cabinet doors for sure! Still fitting them today! Got one mounted and it was time for supper. That's quitting time for me!

Did get the house vacuumed this morning and think we are through getting cleaned up from Friday's freaky dust storm.

My son is a cub scout and they had the Pack's annual Pinewood Derby this past sat. He is 7 and needs a little help making his car, but he did, with my hands on his, use the band saw to cut out the profile (that he designed) of his car. He also sanded his car, and helped to paint it. There were 4 lanes and each scout raced his car on each lane. The races were done on a new type of computer controled track that keeps track of times and which lane the cars were on. In fact, it tells the participants which lane to place their car before each race. The computer averages the time down each lane and determines the winner. Out of about 20 scouts, my son won the first place trophy. The annual contest also includes siblings in their own race against other scout siblings. In that race, my 5 year old daughter also won her 1st place trophy:D. The parents then were allowed to race against each other. My experimental three wheeled car flopped (actually it flipped!) and did not even finish one heat! If I had won my races, I can't help but wonder what reaction there would have been! I really did not spend a whole lot of time with the cars and the kids did a lot of the work themselves, so I was very proud of them. There were other parents with portable workshops all set up to make last minute adjustments and such, working vigorously on there kids cars, with the kids running around not paying any attention:rolleyes:. We had the most fun! My son did not even realize that he had won until they presented him with the trophy. He kept telling the other scouts "good job", "congratulations", "you did pretty good" and "that car looks cool!" Several of the parents commented to me and my wife that our son was a good sport!

Tim:

Glad to hear you enjoyed working with the kids. When my children were the right age, I was not into woodworking, even though I always enjoyed it, so I was not able to spend that time with them.

We are now well into the grandchildren stage and unfortunately none have really shown an interest. However one did come to me with help on a school project a couple of years ago and we had fun trying to decipher the instructions on building a catapult. It was even more fun to find that it actually worked and he was proud of the result, which is the big payoff, as you already know.

Hi John,

Like you, I am of "grandparent age" ;however, neither of our married older children are having children yet, so my wife "decided" to have our own grandchildren! Also, like you, I did not spend enough time with my older children when they were younger. It just seems to be hard for hardworking parents to do so while the kids are growing, and then when they can spend more time, the kids are gone:( . Well, with the younger two that we have, we are purposefully providing lots of family time, and I think it will be very worthwhile. It sure is a lot of fun:D .
