I know this has been discussed before but I need to ask again. I'm getting into different types of turning other than spindle turning. I'm looking at bottle stoppers, bowls, plates and other small turning projects. I have a One Way live center and like it very much.

My questions are.....What is the best all around chuck for the SS? Should it have adjustable jaws? Is there a limited amount of chucks that will work on the SS? Where is the best place to buy a suitable chuck?

I have and like the Oneway talon chuck I have. As long as ya can get the 5/8's plain adapter for the chuck, any one wood work.

I now have a Talon chuck, but before that I used a face plate with pretty good success. Screwed a wood block to the face plate and glued paper and the workpiece to that wood. The paper made for easy separation.

I can see your faceplate glue up example working in many cases. Did you use yellow glue or CA? Why did you settle on the Talon chuck? There seems to be a lot of chuck varieties to choose from and I'm having trouble picking the right one. Price, of course, is always a consideration.

I also use the Talon chuck and am very happy with it. Two main concideration I went thru were the wieght of the chuck as I did not want to put to much pressure on the quill if that really mattered I don't know I am still a beginner when it comes to outfitting my shopsmith. The second reason was the 5/8 plain adapter and the price. Hope this helps. I turned a 14" segmented bowl with this chuch with little trouble. Now trying to do a 14" log might be a different story.

Hi Bob! Used yellow glue on both sides of the paper.

Chose a Talon chuck because it was (I thought) reasonably priced and folks said it was the right size for the Mark V. It's worked out well so far, however I had to learn to turn a 'spigot' that will fit into the chuck.

I got the nova g3 at about 1/3 of the price of the talon.

Bob, FYI, I purchased a SuperNova 2 chuck (Teknatool) last year from Woodcraft. http://www.woodcraft.com/Family/2005199/2005199.aspx I Haven't done a lot of turning with it yet, but it seems to work well for what I have done so far. I do need a smaller set of jaws for it. I am a little concerned about the weight at 5 1/2 lbs. but I was led to believe that with the double bearing spindle, it should be ok. Time will tell. I do plan to get more serious and turn more stuff this fall and winter. I have been stocking up on bowl blanks and other material and educating myself, now I just need to get more hands-on experience. John McCrossen
