View Full Version : Will Mark II parts (chuck, etc) fit Mark V

I occasionally see a Mark II show up on Craigslist and, while the unit itself is of no interest to me, I do need a few odd ball standard parts for my second Mark V model 510 such as the Jacobs chuck, a lathe drive center, lathe face plate, sanding disk, etc.
So my question: specifically for these parts from a Mark II (all of which mount on the 5/8" output shaft on the Mark V) fit the Mark V.
I suspect the answer is 'yes' but before traipsing all over the county, I thought I would check the experts here. Thanks.

I believe you are correct for the items listed.

I agree with jpg on the Jacobs chuck, the lathe drive center, and the lathe face plate.
the sanding disk will fit the spindle but there may be issues with the dust collector and with the table insert. my WAG is that the Mark 2 sanding disk is more similar to the original aluminum Mark 5 sanding disk than it is to the steel one that comes with the 510. of course, that means it should (my guess) work with the SS chisel sharpening jig.
if a 500 version of something will not work on the 510, then I would be extra cautious about whether a Mark 2 version would.
I could certainly be wrong about the Mark 2 sanding disk construction and would be interested in what you find.

Your comments re the sanding disk ARE correct! I am guilty of ignoring dust collection issues(not having dust collection capability for the past 45+++ years).
Ignoring dust collection, all four 12 inch types known to me will work on any of the shopsmith models known to me(they ALL have 5/8" tapered flat shafts)[10e/r,Mark 5, Mark V-500/510/520, Mark VII]
The older aluminum type come in two versions - 10e/r with 3/8-16,3/16 hex set screw and Mark 5 with 5/16-18,5/32 hex set screw.
The newer steel type comes in two versions - Mark V '500' with short hub and 505/510/520 with longer hub.
The Mark VII disk is different in that it is flat on one side and conical on the back. I am not sure the size(not actually having had one IN my hands).
I am assuming the Mark 2 sanding disk is the same as the Mark 5 version(also because I have not had one in my hands either).
