I just bought a second Shopsmith. It's a used Mark V model 510. I bought it off of Craigs List. I'm trying to find out what year it is.
My original SS was bought new in 1982. I upgraded to the 510 system years after I bought it.
The serial number is 012188. From looking at the SS site, I think it was made somewhere around 1973, but I'm really not sure about it. The serial number was not stamped on the belt housing plate like my 82, but was on a sticker just below the metal plate. Also said Model 510 on it.
I believe it states the amps as 13 to 15. I'm assuming that's the 1 1/8 HP motor.
It runs and changes speeds, but needs a PM really bad. Cosmetically, it's rough, but ought to clean up real well. Hardly any rust, but looks like someone used it as a stand to spray paint something. Acetone seems to take the added paint of nicely tho.

BrentThe date of manufacture is a little confusing with that serial number. Looking at this chart (http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/serialnumber.htm), it could be 1981, 1985, 1986, and in 1988 they started using the date code, so yours could be January 21, 1988 (in 1973, they did knot have 6 digit numbers {no leading zero}). Take your pick!

I would suggest that it is a date code and the machine was built January 21, 1988.

Brent, This looks like June of 1987 started with 012554. July '87 started with 013136. If not a date code of 01/21/88, then my guess would be June '87. This shows the model 510 came out in April of '86.
I think this may be the link that JPG is referring to. Scroll down to bottom of page for date codes.

Wow! I'm pumped now........ Didn't think it could be THAT new. It might even have the two bearing quill. Thanks guys for your input.
It's missing the upper saw guard, floating table tubes and the quill feed handle. Considering I paid $300 for it, I think I got a bargain.

I believe you DO have a two bearing quill, since they were started in Sept/Oct of 1984(b4 the 510 was released).
