I recently bought a used Mark V - it came without table saw setup stuff, so I bought a couple of blades and a 1 1/4" arbor from SS - The blade fits in the arbor with too much room to spare (either that or I cannot tighten the nut). The packaging mentions a spacer (either aluminum or plastic) but the part number mentioned by the packaging does not correspond to anything that could be a spacer. Also, I do not have any kind of blade guard that came with the unit. Could this be my problem?

If anyone can upload a picture of what an assembled arbor/blade setup looks like - it could be useful.

Thanks in advance,

Matt

My 1 1/4 arbors don't have any type of spacer. They only have 2 pieces; the arbor and the arbor nut. My blades fit this arbor snugly but not too tight. I've never had a problem.

Did you measure the arbor diameter and the hole in the blade to make sure they are basically the same size?

Glad you found us. I don't have your answer but someone will shortly. Interesting forum user name. How about repling to this thread (http://www.shopsmith.net/forums/showthread.htm?t=3464&highlight=significance).....

Hi Matt,

I don't know of any spacers used with a 1-1/4" saw arbor.

Is your problem related to the blade fitting loosely on the 1-1/4" boss on the arbor (like the hole in the blade is too big for the arbor)? This kind of sounds like a manufacturing problem with the blade or the arbor.

OR

Is your problem that you can't tighten down the nut far enough to tighten the blade on the arbor? If this is the problem, have you noticed that the nut, in addition to being a left hand thread, has a front and a back? If you look at the hole in the nut you will see that there is a relief cut on one side and not on the other. This relief cut allows the nut to pass over the boss on the arbor and tighten down on a blade that is thinner that the thickness of the boss. With the nut mounted correctly you should be able to tighten down the nut all the way hard against the other face of the arbor even with no blade installed.

If I've missed your question entirely, please give the group a little more detail on your problem and we will try again to help I'm sure.

Hi,

I do recall sometime in the past that a part came with the arbors that was called I believe a bumper. It fits between the housing of the headstock and metal ring on the quill. It is a rubber like material and the current one is a 501307. This is for machines that have the plastic lower guard.

Blast from the past means that this might have come with the upgrade kit as well but I don't remember... just lucky I remembered what I did.

Recap, if you have the newer plastic guard then you need the rubber part. This has nothing to do with the mounting of the arbor or the blade on the arbor and everything to do with the correct spacing of the quill to match the guard.

Are you sure you have a saw blade arbor and not a stacked dado arbor?

Hi again Matt,

I hope that you have solved your blade mounting problem, but just in case, I have added some photos of the 1-1/4" saw arbor to my Shopsmith Arbor Photo Album. Most of the 1-1/4" saw arbor photos are of an arbor for the 505/510/520 models, but the saw arbor for the 500 model works the same way.

There are photos of several different types of Shopsmith arbors in the album, but you will want to look at the 1-1/4" saw arbor photos for your situation.
Here is the link to the album,

Hope this helps, let us know how you make out.

Thank you for all your replies - there are a number of different model numbers on the front of the saw arbor package. It has a left-hand thread (righty-loosy, lefty-tighty: backwards from the usual way). The diameter is perfect, but the nut does not want to snug up, and leaves a good bit of space. On the back of the package, it mentions a couple of model numbers that require spacers (501307 and 555070) with the lower saw guard. I have no lower saw guard (or upper saw guard, for that matter).

I have 505511 or 555130, I cannot tell which.
