Jointing extra long boards

My walk-in closet project requires several very long 14" wide shelves, Shown here is one of the 103 inch long boards that I have jointed, and will glue to a companion board in order to achieve my necessary width. Most woodworkers would say that I need a long 8" or 10" jointer in order to do this. However, it is not necessary to put such a large and expensive tool in your shop in order to accomplish this joint. We can do it successfully with the Shopsmith 4" jointer;

However, a special set-up is required. I have placed a heavy duty Rockler roller stand about three feet away from the outfeed table and another roller stand the same distance in front of the infeed;

The "key" to a successful precision jointed edge is the 50 inch Veritas straight edge. Surprisingly, this set-up is rather "straight forward" (no pun intended) and quickly accomplished.

While these efforts would not be appreciated in a production shop, this method is ideal for the home shop. The roller stands and the Veritas straight edge have many other uses around the shop as well.

Thanks guys. These pictures were taken at the "Workshop in the Woods". (in da U.P. eh!)

I brought the camera down to Gainesville, where I have a fast Cox Cable internet connection. In the U.P. our small telephone company spent most of the Summer running fiber optic cable down into the Hiawatha National Forest, so DSL will be available very soon.

This Winter I plan to do major work on my small 1/2 garage shop here in Gainesville. I'll post pictures as progress happens.

Just imagine how easy it would be with two more Shopsmiths. :)
I keep saying that the best infeed / outfeed support for a Shopsmith is another Shopsmith.
No tipping, no shifting. Everything just lines up. :)
If you use one without a headstock, just tables, it could also be your bench with a big added top. Hmmm... :rolleyes:
