Well not much done this past week.

The weather turned good again so during the early part it was back outside to finish spring clean-up, and repair the damage to my front lawn done by skunks digging for grubs. It looked like parts of my lawn were a garden turned over for planting.

Thursday we left to visit my son and family in London, Ontario. On the way, we stopped off in Toronto and I was able to pay a visit to the Canadian ShopSmith distributor. What a lucky move that was. Besides getting to see the 520 table upgrade, the lift assist, and other accessories up close, I was given an offer I couldn't refuse on a strip sander. Now I have to wait patiently for it to arrive in Toronto from Dayton and then from there to home.

I also had quite a chat with the owner on the status of SS in Canada and why he cannot afford to demonstrate at wood shows any longer. Essentially his profit margin is very low after paying for the product and shipping. That combined with the low price of offshore competition for stand alone equipment makes it difficult to market the SS in the quantity needed to support the expense of the show. Apparently in the heyday of SS he could sell about 50 units during a large weekend show. That is no longer the case. That's too bad as I always enjoyed watching those demos. That's what hooked me on SS in the first place.

Upon arrival in London, the first place I hit was the local Lee Valley store Ah that was like being a kid in a candy store. I only bought four items but later remember three others that I wanted but forgot to buy. The rest of the weekend was anticlimatic family visit.

Now with the return of good weather it will be back to repairing the lawn swing.

Happy woodworking!

John - kinda sounds like your wallet is getting thinner almost every day!

Interesting talk you had with SS distributer in Canada! Seems many are having troubles adjusting to the changing World economy.

Last Week I put the color on the China Cabinet door stile (form last week). Used WATCO golden oak. Came out O.K. - a little color change, but not bad! I have always liked the ease of using Danish oil. Most of the Watco had been put on early last week. Since I top coat this with water based polyurethane, I had to wait 7 to 10 days to apply the poly. You know, water over oil doesn't work unless the oil finish has been thoroughly cured. If you're in a hurry, don't try this.

In the meantime I accomplished a job out of the "job Jar". Washed the outside of the house. Gotta say, it looks a lot better, especially with black screens rather than dusty, desert brown.

Learned another lesson today. "When applying a finish, don't turn on the A/C if it has been idle for a while." That's especially important in this windy, dusty desert. A light sanding ought to fix the dust coat after drying.

I'm glad you mentioned your method of applying water based poly over an oil based finish. I prefer the oil based stains to water to bring out the grain, but I have always used a wipe on poly over that because I figured a water based product might not hold. I must try the waiting game sometime and see how it turns out. Water based products do have the advantage of less odour and quicker trying times.

Have fun.

John - I'm sure it will work for you too. Several years ago, I thought I was the only one breaking this rule of putting water over oil. Then I read an article in one of the magazines that said you could do it if you first let the oil cure completely. Hey! I knew that all the time! But it was nice to read one of the "finishing experts" saying it could be done.

I do it mostly for the odor relief. But the faster drying time is a plus. I still like a coat to dry overnite - it makes for better sanding between coats. I have also tried using gloss and sanding to achieve a deep low gloss luster. My experience here is this works better on dark pieces than the lighter ones.

I like water based because I sometimes I don't want a color shift. Water based poly is colorless while oil based seems to carry a red or golden highlight. I never knew you could go over oil with water poly. Thanks for the tip.
