If you plan on using the Oneway wolverine jig, get a slow speed (1725 rpm) 8" 1/2 hp grinder. Woodcraft has one for a around $100 with the white wheels. When sharpening, slower is better to reduce the amound of metal you remove and minimize heat.

I have a 1750 rpm, 1/2 HP,8 inch grinder. BUT what's more important is to have the friable wheels.

90 RPM, look at the Tormek it is one of the easiest to use and the new models are reasonably priced.
There are other dedicated machines that are excellent too.
IMHO: The only thing a grinder is good for is to remove large amounts of metal fast not sharpening tools.

I was researching grinders today and found this thread. It seems that slow speed grinders are the rage, and Woodcrafter's has one bundled with the Wolverine sharpening system.
But...
When I go to the Oneway website (who make the Wolverine) they strongly recommend an 8" 3400rpm (full speed) grinder.
Have I stumbled upon a religious issue?

Yes and I am in the camp of the 1725 rpm grinders with white or pink grinding wheels. I use one in 60 grit for rough work and one in 120 grit for final grinding of lathe chisels and regrinding bevels on chisels and plane irons prior to honing. The slow speed grinders do not build up as much heat to scorch the HSS.

I just bought an 8" variable speed grinder from Steel City. It is model #15420 and includes a light, 60 grit grey and 120 grit white stone. It is a dual stone grinder and has continuously variable speeds from 1725 to 3450 rpm. It is industrial and has a five year warranty. I paid $150 including shipping from toolking.com
