'm interested in doing some pen turning on a 520 Mark V. Does anyone know how to mount the mandel to the head stock?
wolf1gray,
I bought a mandrel with an adaptor which is made for the shopsmith from penn state industries. They are on sale right now for only 17.95 for a 7mm mandrel set. This is the size used for slimline pens & pencils which are a good style to learn with. Also noticed that if you buy their basic starter set which is listed at $58.00 in their catalog. you can get the mandrel set for 1/2 price. This would be a inexpensive way to go if you don't have any setup yet. I had bought some smaller chisels for pen turning, however I like my full size ones better. Everyone to their own preference. One word of wisdom - be careful - pen turning can be addictive. enjoy.
Here is a link for the above mandrel and starter set: http://www.pennstateind.com/store/pkm-cl.html

I don't know if this applies to what you may have or not - but I have one that clamps into the drill chuck on the live end and the dead center in the tailstock.

You can also get one that fits in the Shopsmith router chuck. Woodcraft and Penn Industries both sell ones that correctly work with the Shopsmith headstock. Sometimes they say Shopsmith more often then say for 5/8" motor shaft.

Thanks for the information Ron. I took a class at woodcraft. Think I'm hooked.
