Hi Guys and Gals;
I have been tearing into my SS the last day and while I weas working I realised that there is an inherent danger when performing certain repair procedures and one that I have not seen addressed in any of the repair sections.
The othre day I ws removing the headstock from the machine for service and I took one last look at the setup before I pulled it from the way tubes. Am I ever glad I did!!! My machine has a lift assist and I realised that if I removed the 75 pounds from the way tubes with the lift assist on the machine that it would cause the way tubes and carriage to snap to the upright position probably causing damage to the machine as well as the person doing the work.
No I did not get hurt but it could have been a very dangerous situation to say the least.
Moral of the story: When removing the headstock raise the mavhine to the vertical position and disconnect the gas strut from the lift assist before you slide the headstock off the machine.
Work safe and remember "NO RED SAWDUST".
