Quill Spring

Any advice before I get started??? My quill return spring dosen't work. 'm going to try too get it apart to see if the spring is broken, or maybe a previous owner worked on it and didn't wind it back tight.
Was wondering if there was/is a heads up on doing this????
Heath thanks again for the Spure Center, it looks like it hasn't been used. Did you get the card I sent?

Try this first:
With machine laying down, loosen the quill lock and remove depth stop nuts. Run quill all the way down, it will stop coming out as it reaches the end. As you continue turning the quill feed lever, do you feel spring tension building? If yes then build a little more tension and then manually push quill into headstock while briing feed lever backwards. You may reach a point where you have to hold pulley and turn spindle by hand to get the splines to line up. When they line up, the spindle will snap into headstock-watch your fingers and let go!!

I'm guessing the spring has come unhooked from the shaft.

The quill springs on each of my ER's were packed with sawdust and oil and crud. I didn't find it difficult at all to remove, clean, and reassemble them. I can't really explain the process because I've slept a few times since then.

i have the same problem
but up till now i have just let it slide till some one else posted the problem
but i think that it was due to me removing the quill lock and messing with the head stock when i first got it
so now i know what to do
i did have a problem in the beginning trying to put the quill back in but a flash light and some pondering i was able to see how the whole inards work and now have a great sence for the simpleness that it has
