The whole world is afraid of China-made "black hearted goods".
Can you differentiate which one is made in Taiwan or China ?
If the first 3 digits of the barcode are 690, 691 or 692, the product is MADE IN CHINA .
471 is Made in Taiwan .
This is our right to know, but the government and related departments never educate the public,
therefore we have to RESCUE ourselves.
Nowadays, Chinese businessmen know that consumers do not prefer products "MADE IN CHINA ",
so they don't show from which country it is made.
However, you may now refer to the barcode, remember if the first 3 digits are:
690-692 ... then it is MADE IN CHINA .
00 - 09 ... USA & CANADA
30 - 37 ... FRANCE
40 - 44 ... GERMANY
47 ... Taiwan
49 ... JAPAN
50 ... UK
BUY USA & CANADIAN MADE by watching
for "0" at the beginning of the number.

Hi George,
I have seen this before and it seems the information has a flaw. What it turns out to be is that sometimes the numbers indicate where it was manufactured but only sometimes and not by design. These codes are refered to as country codes, so a company from here in the states is assigned a number block and uses that for products, if they buy a part in china they will still put the assigned number (USA) on the bar code... and sell it here but the part still came from china...
Rather then having me explain anything more here is a FAQ on bar code:
http://www.adams1.com/faq.html#upccountry
Keep in mind UPC is still in use and sub parts may use a manufactures own labels which have no standard except to that company (we use to generate 3 of 5 code labels for our prototype equipment based on a local standard that I developed... how scary is that???

The email you posted goes back to 2008 when the food scare happened and can't be fully relied upon. There are other variables that make determining exact country of origin impossible to determine for the end consumer. Only the 'importer of records' has the responsibility to state the exact country of origin when they distribute to the first level of US consumer which in many cases is a another distributor.
Even when a product states "Made in USA", the only assurance you have is that at least 51% of it's value comes from USA resources. For example, a USA assembled "kit" or "assembly" contain 100% foreign made components yet as long as the kitting or assembly process accounts for 51% of it's selling price, the product can legally be marked and sold as "Made in USA".
US Customs and Border Protection is the ultimate authority for the development and enforcement of the rules for EVERYTHING that enters the Unitied States. Thier website http://www.cbp.gov covers the topic in it's entirety. The rules are written in such a way that you are never really know for sure what they are talking about!!! I guess that's how the government is supposed to work. :(

That is because of the weasel factor. If it is NOT clear, you can deny later its meaning to suit your immediate need for escape!
