Is the 10ER worth buying? What should I pay for a good working unit?

I have six and love them to death. Prices very on condition and what comes with it. If it comes with the speedchanger the price is higher. I spend from $50.00 to $200.00 The two hundred dollar one was original owner, speedchanger, legs, casters, table extention and was in like new condition with all the original paperwork and many extras. The average I spend is $100 and that machine needs to be in good condition. Down side is changing belt to change speed if you don't have a speedchanger but not that much trouble. Up side is a very heavy maching good starter lathe and great drill press. Everyone has his own likes. I also have a MKV 510 I bought new to start this whole mess in 95, Also have a 1963 Brownie and I am not giving any of them up either. I just like the SS machines. The ER is built like a tank and bearing are easy to fine. Good luck PM if you need anything else or questions. I have plenty of pictures of mine and other machines rebuilt and not.

I have two 10ERs and, like wlhayesmfs, I love them to death. I have one dedicated as a drill press. The other one is mostly left in horizontal position.

They can take a lot of work to restore if they've been neglected for years, but it's also very rewarding to bring one back to life.

What is the overall length of the 10ER including the base? I'm just wondering if I have enough room for one.

Hi Dave
I don't have one here in AZ to measure but one advantage of the 10 ER over the Mark V is that it is separate from it's base and because it is you can bench mount it or build a custom bench to fit your space. The Mark V is what it is and is the size that it is period. Let me add my vote to the yes column ...absolutely worth having.

As much as it hurts me to say this, you could 'shorten it'. The 10 can be shortened by relocating the tie rod support in towards the headstock, and remounting the tie rod to match. The way tubes would stick out further beyond the support. Hopefully you would not have to :eek:CUT:eek: them!
