That second paragraph sounds exactly like me! (Well, except for the fishing and jewelry making.) But, I do enjoy a bit of what I call "southern engineering." Sometimes that takes a certain level of ingenuity to really be proud of. It's kind of nice sometimes to stand back and say, "I did that with those tools!
But I still love tools, so don't let my wife hear me say that. She'll remind me of that every time I tell her about a new tool I need!
I would refer to that as common sense!:D
