Last weekend I acquired a Model 500 (1985 vintage) with a 520 upgrade and have just started to check it out. Today I wanted to remove the belt cover, but I cannot remove the coupler adapter from the floating sheave. It doesn't look rusty, but one of the two previous owners didn't align the set screw with the flat on the shaft. It is off by 180 degrees. If this had caused a burr, I think I should be able to move it a little, but it will not budge. The adapter is the type with a thru hole and I am wondering if a gear puller might work, which I can borrow from work. Have any of you experienced this problem and do you have any suggestions?

I had a similar problem on mine. What I did is to remove the set screw and spray it down with a penetrant and let it soak a while. I then tapped it with a wodden mallet to get it moving a little. Once I got it moving, I was able to work it off by prying with a flat pry bar. I then cleaned up the shaft and bore of the coupler adaptor and it slides on and off nicely now.

My guess without seeing it is that it does have some burring happening underneath the adapter and you cannot see it along with some corrosion. I would soak it in PB Blaster or equivalent and then put a bearing puller on it and yank it off. It should come right off with the puller after some soaking.

I have had good results by putting something on the quill end to prevent the quill shaft from turning and using a small padded jaw pipe wrench to turn the hub on the accessory end. This helps round off any burring that may have occurred and by putting some pressure toward removing the hub, I have been able to spin these stuck hubs off without a gear puller. I remove the set screw and use KROIL before doing this.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I applied PB Blaster today and will see how it goes tomorrow after work.
