we lost a large Norfork pine due to the freeze here in houston--my brother in law is very good in turnings I saved some short pieces (4-6 inches 2-3 feet long) but i can't get them to him for a couple of months---do i need to wax the the ends (with what?) would plastic wrap work?---any thoughts
thanks

Plastic wrap will not work. Moisture is exceedingly hard to keep out of wood the best you can do is slow down the transfer so the wood will not check as much or as deep. My suggestion is to very liberally coat each end with woodworkers glue and store horizontally. Good Luck

Wood glue is a good idea. Parafin dries faster. I used it on the end grain for some yard furniture I made from cedar, and it's holding up well with use even.

The checking is caused by a faster migration of the moisture OUT of the wood at the exposed open grain ends. Sealing is recommended by using whatever will prevent the moisture from getting out the end grain end.
Rather than buying a solution to seal the ends, ya could use latex paint.
