thinking of buying a used band saw and power station. (don't know where yet).

never seen a power station in operation.

does it have a dial for speed?

or do you have different pullies and belt for different tools.

TIA

There are POWER STANDS (http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/catalog/sptpowerstands.htm) smaller footprint on the floor (than the power station), 1/2 HP motor (IIRC), either stepped pulleys or fixed diameter to select speed(s) depending on the SPT you are using.

And there is a POWER STATION (http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/catalog/powerstation.htm) Bit larger footprint on the floor, 1 full HP motor, variable speed like the Mark V (but not the complete range), uses the same SPT coupler as when you use the Mark V.

Instead of a 'dial', the power stand has a lever with a lock nut.

Hard to see in the pix, but the handle is red and the locknut is black.

farley,

The Power Station is a valuable addition to a Shopsmith work area. I really do npt know how I would get along without one. However, mine is basically a power stand for my Bandsaw. I seldom change this arrangement.

in the category of "how to use a power station":
is there a straightforward procedure for adjusting a SPT so that it can be used on multiple MarkV's and on a powerstation?
or even move back and forth between one 500 and the powerstation?

I just used my belt sander (adjusted for the 500) on the powerstation for the first time. I wound up just eye-balling the height - raised ~3/4" on the powerstation versus the 500.

I understand how a side to side variation can occur because of the belt tension variance(idler shaft position) on the 500, but the 3/4" vertical variation has me curious.(I do not understand why!).

The belt tension can vary the vertical position, but not by 3/4".

I have not encountered that much difference.

Maybe pix could help 'explain'.

I'll have to relocate the bandsaw to the Mark V to say for sure but I believe that the bandsaw pictured in this thread is directly transportable (without adjustment) to the Mark V.

I will verify this and post the results later.

NOPE, I was wrong. It is off both vertically and horizontally by about 1/4". I guess this is why my bandsaw lives on the Power Station.

I also have a power station. Most of the time the bandsaw sits on it, but it is also used for the belt sander and scroll saw. I prefer to use the jointer on the MK V.

Once you adjust the alignment for your SPT on the power station, this alignment will most likely not be the same as for placing it on your Shopsmith. At least that's what I've experienced.

Here in the Upper Peninsula I have two Shopsmiths. Having the alignments for the SPT's be the same for both Shopsmiths and the power station as well is simply not possible.

With that being said, I really like powering most of my SPT's with the power station. I even use one in Gainesville, in spite of the fact that I have to work there in only 194 sq. ft.
