I was planning to design a clever sander for the hinges on my curio table, something that would sand contours, use standard sandpaper and change grits quickly and easily. I remembered a home made drum in the "treasure chest" that came with my 10ER so I thought I'd start from it and improve or modify it for my purposes, or at least use some of it's parts. When I looked at it I discovered that:

1) It had a thick layer of very soft foam around it.
2) It took standard size paper and
3) It would change grits with a 90 deg turn of a screwdriver !

In short, I tried it out on my complex shaped hinges with 120 grit to start and it was amazing. ...can't improve it a bit. This was unboubtably the work of the same FO who built the lathe copier and the spt to 10ER adapter.

I also am very suspicious that the machined steel sanding disc that was in the chest is shop made.

This adds to my theory that innovative machines like Shopsmith attract innovative people, like my 10Er's FO.

Right you are. I just looked it up in my catalog. I still however bet that the FO of my 10ER didn't know about the Lee Valley one 30 odd years ago when he made this one.

That is one of my forvorite things when I buy a used SS. They always come with a few boxes of miscellaneous items. Just like Christmas!:)

By the way Paul the Curio Table is just amazing. You are not only a Craftsman but also an Artist. And there is nothing hypothetical about that statement!;)

Do a Google image search on:
Singley sanding drum
I have had one of these for probably at least 30 years. :)
BTW, it is a very good tool.

Here are some sanding wheels and drums used in the shoe repair trade. They use strips from a roll or the drum sanders (called bottom sanders) use sheets.
These use a wood core covered in thick felt. The wood core is hinged with one piece mounted rigidly to the hub and the whole thing held closed by two end cams. Several sharp pins help hold the sandpaper in place when the halves are closed.
They work quite well on wood. They mount on 1 5/16ths shafting and I have several adapters made of short pieces of that shafting that attach to the Shopsmith quill stub.

OK I give up. He may have plagiarized a bit. I'd never seen that locking mechanism before. The combination of that and the soft foam however did produce the desired result. I moved easily through 10 grits in a very short time and now have a better job in much less time than I had expected and with NO hand sanding.

I'm not sure if it will show up in the reduced photo but this is the "off the drum" finish.
