This week was interesting to say the least. Work has really slowed down again so I agreed to lay some ceramic tile and install some hardwood flooring for a long time customer. The tile went great. The hardwood not so good!!!!!

This is the view when you open the front door. This portion of the house is over 100 years old. There used to be a double fireplace chimney that was previously torn down to floor level. It was built of a brick border and filled with field stone and dirt. All the joist and sills around it were rotten. But the worst problem is the front silll that supports the house is also rotten. The house was gradually sinking with the execption of the floor that was over the old fire place hearths. Sorry I did not get a picture of that before we tore it out but it was in the black area of the second picture. How the heck did I get in this mess.:D :D

I feel for you too Mark. I remember a commercial fisherman who wanted me to build him a new wheelhouse once. When we got the old one removed, we discovered that the main deck beams were rotten under the house sills where you couldn't see it before. By the time we got down to solid stuff to start building back from the job (cost) was about X 2. I hope your customer has a better attitude than mine did.

Paul they are great people that I have worked for many times over the past 20 years. Although no one would be happy about having to make these type repairs they are glad that we have a game plan to fix the problem and finally be able to install their new hardwood flooring.
