For anyone that wants to add visual references to the punch marks, just fill them with Liquid Paper or white paint.

Here's another idea for marking your stop collar. If you have a 4-jaw lathe chuck, which I don't, you could put the stop collar in the chuck and use the jaws to mark the collar at the center of each jaw. That would give you accuracy to 1/64 inch. If you want to double the accuracy, turn the chuck 1/8 turn and make 4 more marks between the first 4. Now you have accuracy to 1/128 inch.
