Hi, I have a 1985 Mark V. I bought it used so I assume some parts may not be there. The lower saw guard has an opening with a recessed interior groove near the mouth. The outside is NOT 100 percent round. So... it makes me wonder if there wasn't an insert that sat in that groove that was for the dust collector. The outside not being round cannot be for hooking up to a hose.
If anyone could tell me how this is supposed to be I would really appreciate it. I have looked on e-bay for lower saw guards, but have only seen 510's which have a 1 piece molded dust port. I couldn't find anything for the 500's to even look at, and the shopsmith site shows me nothing either.
Thanks,
Rick

Hi,

The older shopsmiths 500 had metal guards, then they made a plastic guard as an upgrade and of course models made then had the same guard. As it turned out the design wasn't up to par so a new design became an option... and is the final design. I have come up the way with the upgrades but I have no picture of that middle step...

You can see the current one at:

Maybe you can tell what is missing or what is different in yours. The middle design has an upgrade and it might be what you're looking for if you have that design. You can see that at:

Hope this helps,

Ed

Thanks for the reply, I've seen those, they aren't it. Also mine is plastic. Tomorrow I will try to post a picture of mine.
Thanks again,
Rick

Rick,
My Mark V is an 1985 model that I upgraded to a 510 and then to a 520. As I remember, there are two small plates that attach to the front and rear of the blade with plastic thumb screws. Perhaps you are missing those plates and/or thumb screws. If so, I probably have my old parts lying around and you're welcome to them if you want to pay the shipping charge.
